At a lot of water polo clubs, the Instagram account is run by one volunteer who is also a parent, a player or the person keeping time at the officials' table. Any matchday plan has to fit around that. This playbook covers what to post before, during and after a game, a weekly rhythm that holds up for a full season, and how to keep it going once the enthusiasm of the first month wears off.
Before the game
Upcoming fixtures, early in the week
Start the week with a fixtures card listing the next five games, each with date, start time, opponent, pool and competition. It answers the questions parents ask in the group chat every week, and it gives followers a reason to come to home games. An Upcoming Fixtures card also works well pinned to the top of your profile and swapped out each week.
Match day card, on the day
Post a match day card on the morning of the game with both crests, the start time, the pool and the competition. Put the pool's address in the caption. When a club trains in one pool and plays in another, visiting supporters sometimes end up at the wrong one.
In stories, a repost of the match day card an hour before the start is plenty. If the game is a big one, add a countdown sticker so followers get a reminder.
During the game
Live updates are optional. The person running the account is often on the bench, in the water or at the table, and a missed timeout call costs the team more than a missed story costs the account.
If someone is free to post, keep it to stories and post at the end of each quarter with the quarter score and one photo. Followers who want more can use the live games page on wpmatch.ch, the Swiss water polo match center. Link it once in a story instead of trying to keep pace with it.
After the game: the first hour
The hour after the game is when players, parents and opponents go looking for the result. Post in this order.
- Final result. Score, quarters and competition. This goes up first, before anyone has sorted the photos. A Final Result card with the quarter line answers most comments before they're written.
- Top scorers. The top three by goals, as a second post or a story.
- Player cards. Individual cards for players who had a good game, shared to the team chat so players can post them to their own stories and tag the club.
- Photos. A carousel later that evening or the next day, once someone has picked the best shots.
Post losses with the same care as wins. A missing result is more noticeable than a lost game, and followers pick up quickly on an account that only shows up on the good weekends.
Scorer lists leave people out
Goals are the easiest stat to publish and the least complete one. Goalkeepers, center defenders and the player who earned three exclusions won't appear on a top scorers card. Balance it during the week with a goalkeeper photo, a defensive moment from the game or a short player feature.
Tagging and the team chat
A card with a player's own name on it is the thing they're most likely to repost, and their reposts reach family and friends who don't follow the club yet. With Clubcain, each player gets a personal link that the club shares in the team chat, and the player opens it to get their card. Our player cards page explains how that works from the player's side.
Tag players in captions only when they've agreed to it. For youth teams, follow the club's policy on names and photos, and check with parents when in doubt.
A weekly rhythm that holds up
Games don't always fall on weekends, especially cup rounds and youth games, so shift the days to match your own schedule. The shape of the week stays the same.
| When | What to post | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Start of the week | Upcoming fixtures for all teams | Feed, pinned |
| Midweek | One non-result post: training, a player feature, youth team news | Feed or stories |
| Day before or morning of | Match day cards for the coming games | Stories, plus feed for the first team |
| Within an hour of each game | Final result, then top scorers and player cards | Feed and stories |
| End of the weekend | Roundup of every team's results | Feed carousel |
The small-club reality
A club with several teams can easily have four or five games in one weekend, spread across different pools. One volunteer can't cover all of that in person, so decide what's mandatory and treat everything else as a bonus.
For most clubs the mandatory part is simple. One result card per game, for every team, every time. A season where every result went up on the night does more for the club than a season of beautiful posts with gaps in it.
A few habits make that possible.
- Give two people access to the account, so one sick weekend doesn't break the streak.
- Lock the templates at the start of the season. Redesigns happen in the summer break.
- Keep a shared folder with crests, player photos and sponsor logos, named consistently.
- Write short captions. The score, one line about the game, the tags. Anything longer can wait for the roundup.
- Ask coaches for one sentence after the game. It's the easiest way to get a real voice into the caption.
Keeping it sustainable
Result cards, scorer cards and fixtures take the most time, and they're also the most repetitive. The posts that need a person are photos, stories from the pool deck and captions that sound like your club. Automate the first group so volunteer time goes to the second.
That split is the idea behind Clubcain. It uses the published league results to generate a Match Pack for every game in your club's colors, minutes after the result goes official, plus player cards that each player picks up from their own link. Team Free covers Match Day and Final Result cards with a watermark. Team Pro adds automatic Match Packs, club branding, sponsor placement and player photos. See how Clubcain works for clubs.
FAQ
How many posts should a club make per game?
Two is a solid baseline, a match day card before the game and a final result card after it. Add top scorers and player cards when you have the capacity. Posting every game for the whole season counts for more than a big effort on one weekend.
How soon after a water polo game should the result be posted?
The same evening, ideally within an hour of the result being published. Players and parents look for it right after the game, and a result posted the next morning gets lost among everything else in the feed.
How do players get their own match graphics?
With Clubcain, the club shares a personal link in the team chat and each player opens their own card. Players get one free card per month with a small watermark and can upgrade for unlimited cards.
