Swiss Water Polo Leagues Explained: The 2026/27 Season Guide

How Swiss water polo's 2026/27 season fits together, from National League A and B and the Swiss Cup to the Swiss Trophy and the women's, youth and regional leagues.

Swiss water polo fits a lot of competitions into one season: two national men's leagues, two women's leagues, men's and women's cups, a Supercup, the Swiss Trophy, youth competitions from U10 to U18 and five regional leagues. All of them publish their results on wpmatch.ch, Swiss Aquatics' water polo match center. This guide explains how the competitions fit together in 2026/27, based on what the match center lists.

The dates below are the ones listed on wpmatch.ch at the time of writing. Schedules change during a season, so check the match center before you plan a trip to the pool.

One detail makes the site easier to read. Some competitions are labeled by the calendar year they finish in, so the National League A season that starts in January 2027 appears as "NLA 2027". Others, like National League Women, use the season span "2026/2027".

Men's competitions

National League A

NLA is the top men's league. Eight clubs appear in the 2027 schedule: Basel Aquatics, Carouge Natation, Genève Natation 1885, Lausanne Aquatique, Lugano Sharks, SC Horgen, SC Kreuzlingen and SC St. Gallen. The regular season is listed from January 30 to May 9, 2027.

The format after the regular season hasn't been posted for 2027 yet. In 2026, the regular season was followed by a second phase with the league split into two groups, then playoffs with best-of-three quarterfinals and best-of-five semifinals and final. That final series ran into July. SC Horgen won the 2026 title, ending a run of five straight championships for SC Kreuzlingen from 2021 to 2025.

National League B

NLB is played in two regional groups, Group West and Group East. Its tables mix the first teams of smaller clubs with second teams of NLA clubs. In 2026 the regular season was followed by playoff semifinals and a single-game final.

The match center doesn't describe how promotion and relegation between NLA and NLB work. If your club's season depends on it, check the current competition regulations from Swiss Aquatics.

Swiss Cup

The men's cup (listed as Cup Men, with games titled Swiss Cup 2027) is a knockout competition over several rounds, with early rounds scheduled from October to December 2026. SC Kreuzlingen won the cup in 2025 and 2026 and leads the match center's title table, which goes back to 1994, with 13 wins.

Swiss Trophy

The Swiss Trophy opened the 2026/27 season on September 11, 2026, in its second edition. Only players holding a Swiss license or a Swiss Sport-Nationality license can take part, and the stated aim is to promote national talent.

Ten teams play in two groups of five, and each team plays its four group opponents once. Group A has Carouge Natation, Genève Natation 1885, Lausanne Aquatique, Riviera Barracudas and SK Bern. Group B has Basel Aquatics, Lugano Sharks, SC Horgen, SC Kreuzlingen and SC St. Gallen. The top two in each group go to a Final Four, where each group winner plays the runner-up from the other group in the semifinals.

Supercup

The Supercup is a single game, played for both men and women. The 2025 men's and women's Supercups were played on the same day, November 16, 2025, in Zürich Oerlikon.

Women's competitions

National League Women

The top women's league, abbreviated NLD in the match center's top scorer lists, has seven teams in 2026/27: CN Nyon, Lausanne Aquatique, SC Frosch Aegeri / SC Zug, SC Horgen, WK Thun, WSV Basel and WaterPolo Winterthur. The season is scheduled from December 5, 2026, with games listed into June 2027. A regular season is followed by playoffs, and last season's final was played as a best-of-three series.

Promotion League Women

Promotion League Women is the second women's league on the match center. Several of its entries are second teams or teams combined from more than one club.

Cup Women and girls' competitions

The women's cup is a knockout played over three rounds, and the 2026 final was played in June. The match center also lists U18 Women and U16 Women competitions and a women's Supercup.

Youth competitions

Club youth competitions run at U18, U16, U14, U12 and U10, and formats vary by age group. The 2026 U18 season, for example, had two groups playing from September 2025 to May 2026, followed by a Final 6 weekend in June.

Interregio works differently. Its teams are regional selections, listed under abbreviations such as RZO, RSR and RSI, and the match center lists Interregio events for U12, U14, U16 and U18. The 2026 U14 edition was played on September 19 and 20 at the Trevano pool in Lugano, with five regional selections playing each other once.

Youth results matter a great deal to families, and for many parents the club's own account is the first place they look. Our matchday posting playbook covers a routine that works across several teams.

Regional Leagues 1 to 5

Below the national leagues are five regional leagues. The match center has no description of how they relate to each other. Judging by the tables, they're organized by area. Regional League 1's recent seasons are made up of clubs from the Lake Geneva region. Regional League 3's 2026 table mixes teams from the Bern and Zürich areas. Regional League 5 has included SK Sparta Konstanz and TS Dornbirn from across the border, alongside clubs from eastern and central Switzerland.

Many regional entries are clubs' second and third teams. Recent regional seasons have started in late autumn or winter and finished in early July.
